Energy Costs Going Through the Roof for Data Centers
BusinessWeek, March 31st, reports in an article entitled: It’s Too Darn Hot”, examines the huge cost of powering, and cooling, data centers and how the tech industry is scrambling for energy efficiency. The power the data centers consumed from 2000 to 2006 doubled in cost and is expected to double again by 2011.

The Business Case for Green
According to HPAC Engineering Magazine’s March issue in an article by Jerry Yudelson, “…with building costs reaching $150 to $300 per square foot, many developers and building owners are seeing that it is a wise business decision to invest 1 to 2 percent of capital cost to secure long-term savings, particularly with a payback of less than three years”.

CEC Promotes Green Buildings for Cuts in CO2 Emissions
The tri-national Commission for Environmental Cooperation (Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.), reports, “It is common now for more advanced green buildings to routinely reduce energy usage by 30, 40, or even 50 percent over conventional buildings, with the most efficient buildings now performing more than 70% percent better than conventional properties.
In the United States, buildings account for:
- 40 % of total energy use
- 12 % of the total water consumption
- 68% of total electricity consumption
- 38% of total carbon dioxide emissions; and
- 60 % of total non-industrial waste
