USBGC Testifies Before Congress
on Green Building, Global Warming, and Retrofitting
According to the latest issue of Indoor Environment Connections (July ’08 issue), the U.S. Green Building Council testified before Congress on Global Warming and the significant impact green buildings have on reducing energy consumption and dioxide (CO2) emissions. They stressed the importance of retrofitting of existing buildings.

IAQ and Productivity
According the latest issue of Maintenance Solutions online publication,
facilitiesnet.com, they state:

The conclusions from these and other studies on the impact of IAQ on productivity can be summarized as follows:

• The impact that IAQ has on building occupant productivity is positive and can be measured.
• By maintaining proper IAQ, the magnitude of productivity improvement is typically 5-15 percent.
• Facilities with good IAQ can expect to have reduced absenteeism by up to 40 percent.

Hospitals Getting Greener
The cover story in the latest issue of Health Facilities Management reports on their latest survey on hospital sustainability. The data shows hospitals are increasing their use of products that meet LEED sustainability or energy-efficient criteria. Currently 45% use HVAC LEED specific products and 41% plan to.  During the past 24 months 29% have installed high efficiency HVAC, 15% plan to in the next 12 months, and 14% plan to do so in the 12-24 months. Energy Conservation Tips from the DWP
FOR THE OFFICE:
• Turning off your desk and overhead lights, and meeting room lights, if they are not needed.
• Keep personal appliance use to a minimum.
• Turn off all computer equipment when you leave the office or when they are not being used.
• Be sure your computer equipment goes into the sleep mode when not in use. (80% savings in energy use)
• Go paperless when possible. Reduced printing and copying translates into reduced energy use.
