EnergyPlus models heating, cooling, lighting, ventilating, and other energy flows as well as water in buildings. While originally based on the most popular features and capabilities of BLAST and DOE-2, EnergyPlus includes many innovative simulation capabilities such as time steps of less than an hour, modular systems and plant integrated with heat balance-based zone simulation, multizone air flow, thermal comfort, water use, natural ventilation, and photovoltaic systems.

DOE on Net-Zero Commercial Buildings

 As recorded by GreenSource, a McGraw Hill web site, “in response to provisions in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) launched it’s Zero Net Energy Commercial Building Initiative in August 2008”.

David Rodgers of the DOE said, “We are bringing to bear the unprecedented collaboration in scientific resources of five national laboratories to bring about the needed transformation of the built environment, lower our carbon footprint in buildings, and accelerate commercial deployment of clean, efficient building
